Solidarity with Tesla

*UPDATE* Friday April 25, 2008.

Very bad news.

Tesla's sentencing finally came down a few days ago. Her guilt was affirmed and she was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Tesla will appeal this in the supreme court of Honduras on May 14th, 2008. As such, we are renewing our efforts for international solidarity. At the Supreme Court, Telsa will ask that the case be thrown out and her freedom granted. The Supreme Court has the power to make this happen.

For more info on the case, please click here to read a message from Tesla about her struggles since she and other community members dared to stand up to for the students in their community.

The following is a sample letter that we are urging supporters to send via fax or email to the powers that be in Honduras.

Ing. Roberto Micheletti, President of the National Legislature,

Abog. Leonidas Rosa Bautista, Public Prosecutor General of the Republic,

Paulina Pérez de Licona, Director of Public Defense,

Neil Reeder, Canadian Ambassador to Honduras

I am writing you today as a member of the international community disturbed by the unjust treatment Tesla Ventura, a Lenca woman, mother of five children, and community volunteer who was recently sentenced to four years in prison after a highly suspicious trial.

I am shocked that the authorities of Honduras act with such blatent disregard for the prinicples of justice and fairness.

I hope that you, the authorities of the Republic of Honduras, use this opportunity to show the international community that Honduras is a country where justice exists, and a country whose citizens are treated with respect, care, and impartiality without corruption or malicious intent.

I also declare that, as a member of the international community, I will continue to follow the case of Tesla Ventura and any possible violations of international human rights laws.

Respectfully,

Respetuosamente,

[end of letter]

If you have the ability to send faxes, please fax Beatriz Valle, Ambassador of Honduras in Canada, fax: 613-232-0193

Thank you for your solidarity in this. Even if we do not succeed, it is good and important to be reminded that caring, progressive people are around in the world, trying.

*UPDATE* Thursday January 31, 2008.

Thank you everyone for your continuing support. The government and court officials are aware of the international support and attention Tesla's case is receiving, and as such continue to delay her sentencing, being unsure themsleves how to procede. Yesterday we were able to show Tesla this petition, and she was greatly touched, especially by the powerful and supportive comments. The petition now has well over 200 names and has reached 18 countries: Canada, the USA, Ireland, Barbados, Iceland, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Honduras, Bolivia, Mexico, Cuba, Finland, Venezuela, Guatemala, Costa Rica, China, and France!

Also, we have added the email addresses of the relevant authorities if you wish to send comments directly to them. Thanks!

*UPDATE* Monday January 21, 2008.

Still no news on the sentencing date. But, this petition has now topped 100 signatures, and has travelled to ten countries: Canada, the USA, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Honduras, Bolivia and France! Please continue to spread Tesla's story.

In solidarity.

*UPDATE* Thursday January 17.

Tesla's sentencing has been delayed to a future date. We are unsure exactly why this has happened, or for when it will be rescheduled. In the mean time, Tesla must continue her weekly trips to sign the court registry, and continues to be denied the right to leave Honduras. Doctor Almendares is keen to continue and intesify the international campaign. Thank you for you continuing support! In the last three days Tesla's story has reached Canada, the USA, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, and France!

We are seeking international support for a colleague and friend, Tesla Ventura. She has been unjustly persecuted for her actions in support of her community.

Two years ago, Tesla helped organize a meeting of parents, teachers and directors at the local high school in the rural area where she lives. The students and their parents were upset because a number of teachers had not been giving classes (while still getting paid), but were now expecting students to take their exams. Before the meeting could proceed everyone had to wait for the arrival of regional directors, and as a result of their tardiness, everyone present, including a group of teachers, spent the night at the school waiting. A number of days later, charges were leveled against Tesla and the other parent leaders. They were charged with illegally detaining several teachers at the school, even though these teachers had spent the night of their own volition. The parent leaders were offered a choice, admit guilt and be let free but denied the opportunity to participate in community organizing in the future, or deny guilt and be forced to go every Friday to sign a book in the courthouse of a town an hour away until some future point when a trial can be held. 6 out of eight of the parent leaders signed. Tesla would not. She has been going to Marcala, to the court house there to sign the book, every Friday since May of 2005. Also, she has been denied the right to leave the country.

In November, we four Canadian interns working here in Honduras attended Tesla's trial and watched in dismay as the prosecution presented "witness" after "witness" to lie to the judges about the events of that day, claiming that Tesla was a key player--some of these so-called witnesses, Tesla had never seen in her life, and one was bold enough to make eyes at the attractive prosecution lawyer. These witnesses, around a dozen in total, recounted their detention and mistreatment, and how a gang of machete-weilding parents and students held them captive. Tesla was allowed only three witnesses in her defense.

Tesla's sentencing is tomorrow, January 15 2008. We will watch, hoping that they do not sentence her to the maximum 6 year term that the prosecution is seeking. We will hope that this beautiful indigenous woman, mother of 5, and key member of her community will be granted her freedom. But, having seen the miscarriages of justice that have already happened, this seems unlikely.

Tesla needs INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT. Please read and sign the petition below.

Re: Justice and Liberty for Tesla Ventura

Dear Honourable:

President of the Republic, Ing. José Manuel Zelaya Rosales

gvalladares@presidencia.gob.hn

President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Abog. Vilma Morales

vmorales@poderjudicial.gob.hn

Presidents of the National Legislature, Ing. Roberto Micheletti

romiba2003@yahoo.com

Public Prosecutor General of the Republic, Abog. Leonidas Rosa Bautista

lrosa@mp.hn

Director of Public Defense, Paulina Pérez de Licona

plicona@poderjudicial.gob.hn

We, the international community declare our concern for Tesla Ventura, a Lenca woman, mother of five children, and community volunteer who was condemned to prison after a suspicious trial.

It worries us greatly that the authorities allowed Ms. Ventura to present only three witnesses, and gave her only three days to prepare her defense. These limitations placed upon the defense gave the prosecution a large advantage that was obviously not just.

We are disappointed and frustrated to learn that such dishonest and shameful activities occur in Honduras.

We ask with great hope that you reconsider the case of Tesla Ventura and grant her her liberty and rights, and order a new trial so that she might prove her innocence.

We hope that you, the authorities of the Republic of Honduras, use this opportunity to show the international community that Honduras is a country where justice exists, and a country whose citizens are treated with respect, care, and impartiality without corruption or malicious intent.

We, the international community, will observe, with great concern, how this case proceeds. We insist that the authorities make a just decision, in order to impress upon the world that Honduras has a justice system that follows international laws concerning human rights.

With much respect,
